The word / the image

Poetry
without illustration.

A poem does not need an image. A mezzotint does not need a text. When they meet, each should deepen the silence of the other.

A parallel language

The page and the plate.

Hancharova’s mezzotints lend themselves naturally to literary dialogue because both poetry and mezzotint depend on compression: a few words, a restricted palette, an immense interior range. The aim is not to illustrate a poem literally, but to create a visual extension of its emotional temperature.
